Grass Fires
On May 11th, the Prince Albert Fire Department were called out to 3 separate grass fires around the city. No injuries were reported.
Cooking Fire
On May 9th at 3:15pm, the Prince Albert Fire Department attended a call for 'alarms ringing' at a residence in the West Hill. On arrival the department was met with the home owner who had left the home approx. 15 to 20 minutes prior. The cause of the alarm was smoke generated from a pot being left on the stove. The pot was removed and the home was ventilated to remove the smell of smoke. This is an example where a monitored smoke alarm system may have saved this home from additional loss due to fire. Smoke alarms save lives and property.
Grass / Bale Fire - RM of PA
The Prince Albert Fire Department responded to a grass fire in the RM or Prince Albert. A fire was found encroaching a residence and spreading across an open field. Firefighters cut off the fire prior to it reaching any structure, but a number of hay bales had caught fire. These bales burned for hours with moderate winds fanning the flames. A front end loader was brought in to spread the bales out to help with extinguishment. No other loss was reported, although firefighters were on scene for more than 8 hours. No injuries were reported.
River Rescue
At 16:18 May 5/13 the Prince Albert Fire Department responded to report of a woman in the river in the 1100 block of River Street East. A 3 man zodiac rescue crew was launched and a command unit responded to the shore location. On arrival in the 1100 block of River Street, many bystanders reported a person in the river but the location was unknown.

A shore based search began while the zodiac proceeded on the river to the last reported location. A person was spotted by a police officer, floating along the river bank. One member of the zodiac crew wearing a cold water immersion suit entered the water from the zodiac and grabbed the victim. She was passed to firefighters on shore who used a rope and manpower to bring victim up steep river bank. Victim was transported to hospital. Three fire/rescue units and 8 firefighters responded to this water rescue.

The public is reminded that the river is a very dangerous place at any time of year, but especially so with the high water levels and extremely cold water.
Grass Fire
On Monday April 29/13 at 17:51 the Prince Albert Fire Department responded to report of a grass fire north of SIAST - Woodlands Campus. On arrival a small grass fire was burning on a large ground berm. To reduce the potential for subsequent grass fires in this area, a decision was made to do a controlled burn of the grass on the berm. The cause of this fire was reportedly kids playing with fire. Parents are encouraged to discuss the dangers of playing with fire with their children and remind them never to approach any fire scene, especially a grass fire. Grass fires are extremely unpredictable, can change direction instantly and can easily travel faster than a person can run. There was no property damage or injuries reported from this fire.
Smoke in Structure
On April 28, 2013, the Prince Albert Fire Department responded to 1225 28th Street East (Carlton Park Apartments) for fire alarms ringing. On arrival, firefighters had to force open the door to the apartment. Upon entry, light smoke was encountered from what was determined to be food burnt on the stove. Upon a search of the apartment, an unconscious female was located. She was immediately carried out by firefighters to waiting firefighters who provided treatment until EMS arrived. She was then transported to hospital for further treatment. Firefighters vented the apartment and found no other damage.
