    HTMLPage1

Finding discarded needles in the community is a health and safety concern. Each year there are reports of children and adults finding needles in the community. Needles can be dangerous if handled incorrectly. The sharp end of the needle can cause injury and infection if the needle is not clean.

ONLY THE SHARP END OF THE NEEDLE IS DANGEROUS

    Needle Drop off locations:

    • Fire Station, 76 15th Street East (front of the station)
    • Liquor Store, 99-9th Street East (behind the store)
    • National Hotel, 906 1st Avenue West (rear of building)
    • Sylken Confectionary, 1600 15th Street West (behind the store)

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IF YOU FIND A NEEDLE

CHILDREN should tell an adult immediately. Children should never touch, pick up or play with discarded needles.

ADULTS can safely dispose of a used needle by following these steps:

    • Get a small hard container that needles cannot poke through, such as a pop bottle or plastic container. The container must have a lid.
    • Wear a pair of gloves (preferably leather).
    • Pick the needle up by the plunger end, keep the pointed end away from you. NEVER try to put the cap back on the needle.
    • Put the needles into the container. If there is a needle cap, put it in the container too. Put the lid on tightly.
    • Wash your hands.

If you feel that you cannot follow these steps safely, call the Prince Albert Fire Department at 953-4284 or Public Health Services at 765-6540.
